Meet the Real-Life Heroes: Accessibility-Inspired Action Figures

In a world where superheroes often wear capes and fly through the sky, there’s an emerging genre of action figures that tells a different, far more powerful story—one rooted in advocacy, access, and inclusion.

These custom action figures celebrate the real-life champions of digital equity, accessibility, education, civil rights, and inclusive communication. From tech-savvy educators to disability rights attorneys, these blister-packaged mini-figures don’t just look cool—they send a bold message: advocacy is powerful, and inclusion is heroic.

A stylized action figure package labeled "Accessibility Advocate" features a smiling Black man with glasses, wearing a brown jacket, white shirt, navy pants, and gray sneakers. The packaging includes miniature accessories: a laptop displaying code, a magnifying glass, a round accessibility symbol, a WCAG guidelines book, a mug labeled "Alt Text Matters," a braille keyboard, and a sign reading "Inclusive Design Edition." The background is a bold blue, evoking a toy packaging aesthetic while celebrating digital accessibility and inclusive design.

Why Action Figures?

There’s something deeply symbolic about putting someone in an action figure format. It immortalizes their work, their impact, and their values in a visual, tangible way. These figures—modeled with thoughtful detail—carry the tools of their trade: laptops with accessibility dashboards, hearing aids, keynote microphones, compliance reports, and mugs that say things like “Accessibility is Justice” or “Alt Text Matters.”

They aren’t generic collectibles—they’re storytelling objects. They take the unseen work of accessibility professionals and put it front and center, with the same reverence we give to comic book heroes or pop culture icons.

The Figures That Started It All

The first figure we created was called the "Accessibility Advocate"—a full-figure, blister-pack toy equipped with a Braille display, a WCAG guideline booklet, and a coffee mug that read “Alt Text Matters.” It was both a tribute and a conversation starter, designed to visually celebrate those who work to make the web and digital spaces usable for everyone.

Our LinkedIn post created a ton of buzz.

From that conversation sparked a cascade of ideas. Soon, there was the "Civil Rights Defender", packaged with a miniature U.S. Constitution and a protest sign that says “Justice for All” (modeled after Lainey Feingold). Then came the "Inclusive Communicator", modeled after keynote speaker Dustin Giannelli, who champions access and clarity through lived experience with hearing loss.

And most recently, the "Fierce Latina Advocate", inspired by Wendolyn Velez-Torres—a powerhouse instructional designer and digital accessibility specialist—who fights for inclusion in every corner of higher education. Her action figure includes a glowing purple stylus, a podium labeled “Faculty Innovation Leader,” and a badge that signals her leadership in both classroom and campus-wide transformation.

We'll certainly be making more of these on a customer-by-customer basis to share the mission and importance of regular people as accessibility heroes.

Why It Matters

Too often, the people behind accessibility work go unnoticed. They are behind the scenes—remediating course content, advising developers, training faculty, advocating for legislation, or designing accessible systems. These figures flip the script. They say: This work is worthy of visibility. This person is worthy of celebration.

They’re also just plain fun. They add joy and whimsy to a movement that, while serious and vital, benefits from creative storytelling. Whether they live on a desk, pop up in a presentation, or spark a conversation on social media, these action figures have one goal: to humanize and honor the incredible people driving inclusion forward.
