A "Shopify accessibility app" is really three different products: a scanner that finds problems, an overlay that masks them, or a remediation service that fixes them in your code. Which one you need depends on where your store stands today, not on which listing has the best reviews. This page routes by situation β what you are trying to accomplish, and what to do first.
TestParty competes in this market. This page uses public information and cited sources; evaluate all options against your own requirements.
Key numbers: The Shopify App Store lists 67+ accessibility apps, the large majority of them overlay widgets (TestParty analysis, August 2026). Shopify's Theme Store requirements map to roughly 16β22% of WCAG success criteria; Dawn ships with 30β100 detectable violations and premium themes 100β350 (TestParty audit data, August 2026). Automated scanning catches roughly 60β70% of WCAG issues; the rest require manual expert testing (TestParty remediation data). More than 1,000 businesses with accessibility widgets installed were named in accessibility lawsuits in 2024 (TestParty analysis of Court Listener public records). Plaintiffs filed 3,117 federal website accessibility lawsuits in 2025, up 27% year over year (Seyfarth Shaw).
Start here: what is your situation?
Four situations cover nearly every merchant searching for a Shopify accessibility app: you want a diagnosis, you have received a legal demand, you want visible accommodations for shoppers, or you need conformance that survives scrutiny. Each points to a different tool.
The mistake that wastes the most money is skipping this step β installing whichever app ranks first in App Store search, then finding out months later that it never addressed the thing you were worried about. A scanner will not reduce your violation count. An overlay will not produce documentation your attorney can use. Find the sentence below that sounds like your week, and start there.
"I just want to know where I stand"
Start with a scanner. It costs nothing, takes about a minute, and converts an anxious hunch into a countable list of WCAG failures you can act on.
The walkthrough is short: install a free scanner from the App Store, approve a read-only connection, and run it against your home page, a collection page, a product page, and your cart. TestParty publishes one of these free scanners (disclosure); our free Shopify accessibility scan setup guide covers the steps and how to read the output.
Expect a higher number than you assumed: 95.9% of the top million home pages had detectable WCAG failures, averaging 56.1 errors per page (WebAIM Million, 2026). In TestParty's audits of Shopify stores, the first scan is where the conversation changes β merchants expecting a few alt-text gaps find contrast failures, unlabeled fields, and keyboard traps across every template.
Know the ceiling before you rely on the result: automated detection reaches roughly 60β70% of WCAG issues, and the rest needs a human tester. A clean scan is a floor, not a certificate.
"I got a demand letter or I'm in legal trouble"
Do not start with an app. Start with counsel and documentation, then remediation β a scanner report alone changes nothing a plaintiff's expert can test, and installing a widget after the letter arrives is not a defense.
Sequence matters. Route the letter to an attorney and stop public commentary. Then capture a dated record of your current state and every fix from this point on: scan exports, a remediation log, an accessibility statement with a real contact route. Our ADA demand letter response playbook covers the full sequence and real settlement outcomes.
Documented, in-progress remediation is the asset that moves the number. TestParty customer Dorai Home answered a $74,999 demand with documented remediation evidence and settled for $2,000 within about a month; in another public matter, Joanna Vargas was dismissed at $0. Neither outcome came from an app install; both came from showing, with dates, that the code was being fixed. Ecommerce defendants account for 69β77% of digital accessibility suits (Seyfarth Shaw), so this is where the largest share of Shopify merchants eventually lands.
"I want visible accessibility features for my shoppers"
An overlay widget is a personalization toolbar, and that is a legitimate thing to want. Font resizing, contrast inversion, letter spacing, and a reading mask genuinely help some shoppers with low vision or dyslexia.
The honest framing is a user-experience purchase, not a compliance one. An overlay adds a JavaScript layer over the rendered page; your theme code is unchanged, so the violations underneath sit exactly where a screen reader β and a plaintiff's expert β finds them. The Overlay Fact Sheet, signed by 800+ accessibility practitioners, puts it plainly: overlays "do not repair the underlying problems with inaccessible websites."
The litigation record supports that reading. More than 1,000 businesses with widgets installed were named in accessibility lawsuits in 2024 (TestParty analysis of Court Listener records). And in April 2025 the FTC finalized a $1 million order and 20-year consent decree against accessiBe specifically over marketing claims that its overlay could make websites WCAG compliant. Buy the toolbar for the toolbar, and write the exit plan before you install it. Our comparison of 12 Shopify accessibility apps breaks down what each widget actually changes.
"I want to actually be compliant"
Then the work is source-code remediation: editing the Liquid, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript that produce the failures, so the store itself conforms β no widget layer required. This is the only path that changes what assistive technology parses.
In practice it runs template-first. An auditor maps your theme's components, catalogs failures against the 55 Level A/AA success criteria in WCAG 2.2, and fixes them where they are generated β one corrected product-card component clears the same violation across 5,000 product pages. Fixes ship as pull requests you review; TestParty customers typically spend 15β30 minutes a month on that review, with initial remediation running 14 days as the reference model. Then verification: post-remediation stores target Lighthouse accessibility scores of 90+, five or fewer WAVE errors, and three or fewer axe errors, backed by daily scans and monthly manual audits producing date-stamped reports.
The thresholds are the point. "We installed something" is not a defensible claim; "this template scores 94 in Lighthouse, three axe errors, audited September 12" is. For the architecture in full, see our reference on source code accessibility remediation; for the legal context, our Shopify ADA compliance guide. As of August 2026, TestParty has remediated 35 million+ accessibility issues across customer stores.
Which combinations actually work together?
Two pairings are worth the money, and one common pairing is not. Scanner plus remediation is the standard sequence: the scan produces a prioritized queue, remediation clears it, monitoring keeps it clear as your store changes.
The second is subtler β an overlay's personalization toolbar running on top of already-remediated code. Used that way, the widget is a preference layer for users who want larger text or higher contrast, sitting above a storefront that is already keyboard-navigable and properly labeled. Nobody depends on it for anything structural.
The pairing that fails is a widget plus nothing else: a visible button, a monthly invoice, an unchanged violation count. If budget forces one purchase this quarter, in our assessment a scan plus fixing your top three template-level failures beats a subscription that changes no code.
What the Shopify App Store won't tell you
Two facts sit behind every listing. Shopify's app review does not test third-party apps for accessibility, and Shopify's theme requirements cover only 16β22% of WCAG success criteria (TestParty analysis) β so an app can hold a 4.9-star rating while introducing new violations to your store.
Shopify says as much itself. Its theme accessibility best practices carry the caveat that "following only the best practices on this page doesn't guarantee that your theme is completely accessible." Ratings compound the confusion: they measure install experience and support responsiveness, not whether anyone's WCAG conformance improved. Read the one- and two-star reviews first. Your decision in one screen
Five situations, five answers. Find your row, take the first step, and treat the last column as the thing that app type will never do for you.

What is the best accessibility app for Shopify? There is no single best app, because "accessibility app" covers three unrelated jobs. For a diagnosis, a free scanner is the right tool. For visible accommodations, an overlay toolbar delivers that. For WCAG 2.2 AA conformance that holds up under expert testing, only source-code remediation changes the markup assistive technology reads. Match the tool to the job, then compare vendors.
Will a Shopify accessibility app make my store ADA compliant? No app achieves compliance on install. Compliance depends on your theme code, content, and installed third-party apps β and Shopify's theme requirements cover only 16β22% of WCAG success criteria (TestParty analysis). Apps are delivery mechanisms: scanners report, overlays layer JavaScript, remediation services ship code fixes. Listings promising instant automatic compliance make the claim the FTC penalized accessiBe for in April 2025.
Is a free accessibility scan good enough? It is the right first step and an incomplete answer. Automated tools detect roughly 60β70% of WCAG issues (TestParty remediation data); the rest β meaningful alt text, logical focus order, keyboard traps, cart-update announcements β require a human tester. Use the scan to size the problem and prioritize templates, then plan expert review before claiming conformance.
Are accessibility overlays worth installing at all? As a personalization toolbar, sometimes. Font sizing, contrast, and spacing controls help some users, and merchants with no development budget this quarter may reasonably want something visible while a real plan forms. As a compliance measure, the evidence is unfavorable: more than 1,000 widget-equipped businesses were named in accessibility lawsuits in 2024 (TestParty analysis of Court Listener records). Treat it as a bridge with an end date.
How long does source-code remediation take on a Shopify store? The reference model is 14 days for initial remediation, because Shopify stores are template-driven β fixing a component once resolves that failure on every page rendering it. After that it is maintenance: daily automated scans and monthly manual audits, with merchants spending roughly 15β30 minutes a month reviewing pull requests. Verification targets are Lighthouse 90+, five or fewer WAVE errors, three or fewer axe errors.
