How Magic Spoon Right-Sized Accessibility Compliance as a Lean Startup with TestParty
From 50% of dev budget to sustainable:Earlier accessibility sprints consumed more than half of Magic Spoon’s monthly dev budget. TestParty replaced that with a right-sized, maintainable plan.
150 hours down to 2-3:A lawsuit-driven remediation once carried a roughly 150-hour internal quote. The equivalent work with TestParty took the internal team a maximum of two to three hours.
Education as the differentiator:For a lean marketing-led team, TestParty’s clear, transparent explanation of the accessibility landscape, and what was predatory about it, was the deciding factor.
Flexible terms that fit a startup:Rather than a rigid annual contract, Magic Spoon worked out a quarterly cadence that matched its bandwidth and budget.
A “gold standard” partnership:Magic Spoon now references TestParty as a model partner and recommends it to peers.
THE SCENARIO: A Fast-Growing Cereal Startup
Magic Spoon is a high-growth, direct-to-consumer cereal brand built on a lean startup team. For a company at that stage, every decision about digital accessibility ran through one question: what’s the right level of team bandwidth and budget to reduce legal risk and serve customers, without over-investing?
THE CHALLENGE: No Sustainable Middle Ground
Before TestParty, prioritizing accessibility was a persistent challenge.
“We’re a very lean team. We’re a startup, so it was an ongoing conversation around the right level of bandwidth and budget to allocate toward reducing legal risk and supporting our customers."
- Ciara Lyndon, Magic Spoon
The options the team found were all wrong-sized. Heavy in-house dev sprints weren’t sustainable: “We did some pretty heavy dev sprints that were taking up more than 50% of our monthly allocated budget,” Ciara said. The alternatives didn’t fit either, the overlay-style products “didn’t feel like the strongest approach,” while the big-name remediation agencies came in with what Ciara called “astronomical quotes that we just would not consider.”
The stakes became concrete when, under a previous dev agency, Magic Spoon was presented with a suit and a 60-day window to show it had acted. That agency quoted roughly 150 hours to remediate. (Legal specifics are kept general here at Magic Spoon’s discretion.)
THE SOLUTION: Clarity, Flexibility, and Code-Level Fixes
What won Magic Spoon over wasn’t a feature list, it was understanding.
“Of all the vendors I chatted with in this space, you were able to most clearly talk me through what we needed and what was predatory about this space,”
- Ciara, Magic Spoon
“The knowledge you bring and the education you did in the onboarding process was a huge differentiator. As a marketer, there’s a lot of misinformation around ADA, and that was a really key selling point.”
TestParty also met the company where it was on terms, structuring a quarterly cadence rather than forcing a rigid annual commitment. “Finding a flexible solution that helped us find the middle ground is what made this partnership a really strong success, not just in my everyday interactions, but from our leadership team’s point of view,” Ciara said.
Because TestParty works directly in the Shopify theme’s source code rather than layering on an accessibility overlay widget, the value persists. “We’re always looking for vendors where the service is an investment we can retain long-term, versus a monthly subscription that, when we stop, there’s nothing to show for the work,” Ciara said. “It’s really meaningful that the changes are implemented directly in the back end.”
THE RESULTS: Hours Back and Anxiety Gone
The contrast in effort is stark. Against the prior 150-hour quote, the equivalent accessibility remediation with TestParty “definitely wasn’t anything more than a max two-to-three-hour commitment from internal team time,” Ciara said, with TestParty and the dev team handling ticketing, QA, and staging.
Beyond the hours, the engagement changed how the team feels. “It’s just reduced anxiety,” Ciara said.
“We were previously operating in a state of: I don’t know if we’re going to get hit with a suit, and if we do, we’re going to have to handle it. Now, if something comes our way, we’re prepared to show the efforts and the compliance represented on our site.”

That confidence has made TestParty a reference point for the team. “We always look to TestParty and recommend it to our friends as kind of the gold standard of partnerships in the space,” Ciara said.
THE ROAD AHEAD: Maintainable for the Long Run
Magic Spoon continues on a quarterly maintenance cadence that fits its team, with continuously updated reports available as evidence and ongoing support through Slack. Ciara’s advice to other brands captures the lesson: understand what true compliance means for a Shopify site, level-set it against your team’s bandwidth, and prioritize a maintainable solution over a heavy upfront investment you forget about until you fall out of compliance again.
